Hi everybody,

Just popping in quickly to share a little something. A friend of mine shared this meditation with me on the Wiccan holiday of Imbolc, and i thought you might appreciate it:

Threefold Meditation

Peace be with you
What is your Chinese zodiac animal?

I'm a Wood Ox. Unfortunately, i know very little about the Chinese system, so all i can say regarding the accuracy of my zodiac sign is that i am, indeed, a stubborn ox at times.

Writer's Block: This is a Recording

If you were to make an album consisting of only covers, which songs would you pick to sing?
Ooh, this could be fun.

Okay, so my favorite songs to sing, in whatever order i think of them:

• Black Horse and a Cherry Tree (KT Tunstall)
• Uninvited (Alanis Morissette)
• Sins of My Father (Tom Waits)
• The Dog Days Are Over (Florence and the Machine)
• Angel (Sarah MacLachlan)
• Dust in the Wind (Kansas)
• Fever (Peggy Lee)
• I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2)
• Wash Away (Joe Purdy)
• Rolling in the Deep (Adele)
• Where's the Girl? (from Scarlet Pimpernel)
• All That Jazz (from Chicago)
• I Miss the Music (from Curtains)
• Defying Gravity (from Wicked)

And by the time i get through all that, nobody will want to hear me ever again XD

Peace be with you

very GRR only.

A good samaritan found this cat today in a gutter by Clark Park, half dead. He is now at the Cat Doctor with a body temperature of 90 (normal is 102) and blood PCV of 8. The Cat Doctor housecat, Diamond, is currently donating blood to save his life. During the exam, the vet found that this cat has a microchip. When called, his "owners" reported that he was acting sick, so they put him outside. If this makes you as angry as it makes us, please channel your anger in one of two ways: visit our website at www.citykitties.org and make a donation to help us pay for his care, or share this post and encourage others to do so.

Seriously, who abandons an animal to die because it was "acting sick"??? Honestly, this is the kind of empathy-failure normally reserved for sociopaths. WTF?!

Grr.

Alan Rickman on Snape

So, in this recent article about Alan Rickman's role in Seminar, there's a graf that makes passing mention of Severus Snape. And in it, Alan Rickman describes the Potions Master as "unutterably honorable."

Unutterably honorable.

I think that suits him perfectly =)

Peace be with you

a response to "The Response"

This is, by far, the best assessment of Gov. Perry's recent totally-not-hijacking-religion-for-political-gain circus that i've seen.

Look into ourselves for guidance

Thank you, Rev. Rigby.

Peace be with you

Edit: I e-mailed Rev. Rigby to thank him for writing this article, and was pleased to hear from him that he's received hundreds of supportive messages already. But he also said that he appreciates hearing from people; so, if you feel so inclined, his e-mail address is listed at the bottom of the article.

Writer's Block: Parlez-vous francais?

Because i'm procrastinating.

What other foreign languages do you know? Which one(s) do you want to learn?

I studied French for six years (which you'd think would mean i'd know it by now), but i've forgotten most of it. When i went to college, i took a year of Italian to satisfy the school's foreign language requirement, and then a year of Turkish just because it sounded like fun (it seemed like a good idea at the time).

As for fictional languages (hey, those count), i toyed with Quenya for a little while in high school, although i didn't really progress very far; and i'm reasonably conversant in Na'vi. And yes, i still think that had at least some positive effect on my getting accepted into the MIT program =P

I'm taking French and Italian grammar books with me to MIT in the hope that i'll be able to get those back up to speed. In addition, i consider myself insufficiently educated until i've learned Latin. I'd also like to learn one language that doesn't use the Roman alphabet. At one time i toyed with learning Sanskrit, but more linguistically capable friends have scared me away from that particular horror. I already learned the Greek alphabet for a class in college, so i occasionally toy with the idea of learning Greek—Classical, Koine, or Modern, i haven't decided. The Korean writing system is pretty awesome, though, so i've also pondered that one from time to time.

Don't be afraid

Completely random. I was reading a bit of Rumi this evening, and i particularly enjoyed this stanza:

You were dust and now you are spirit.
You were ignorant and now you are wise.
The one who brought you here
will bring you still further.
Your pain will become your pleasure
as He draws you near.
Don't be afraid—
His flames are like cooling water.
To give your soul life is His sacred duty,
To break your binding chains is His only mission.

I love me some Rumi. Just thought i'd share.

Peace be with you
This one goes out to all the Slytherins.

Nota bene: I'm assuming everyone who reads my journal knows how the Harry Potter books end. If that is not you, then i recommend that you move along. Here be spoilers...

This post has been made public, so any Slytherin who wants can feel free to gank this image.
